Weighing of the Heart — Judgment Scene

Scene

The deceased, accompanied by Anubis and Thoth, appears before the scales. The heart is weighed against Ma'at's feather; Ammit stands ready to devour the unworthy.

The British Museum Papyrus of Ani preserves a famous painted version of this judgment vignette, which later popular editions reproduced in facsimile.

Ethics of the balance

The feather is not a trophy; it is a measure. Balance signals a life aligned with Ma'at. The preceding negative confessions before the assessors prepare the heart for that test.

Manuscript details differ, but the ethical core is stable: speech, violence, theft, and false measure are weighed as real burdens.
